Tea tree oil (TTO) is an aromatic essential oil obtained by steam distillation of the fresh branches and leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia, a shrub species of the Melaleuca genus in the Myrtaceae family. Tea tree oil is native to Australia. It is also produced in China, with the main production areas being Guangxi, Guangdong and Yunnan.
